Volunteers are the ones who keep the VA system going smoothly. What we need most are regular scheduled volunteers.
These areas are where the volunteer needs are continuous:
- Volunteer drivers, must be certified under DOT
- Friendly visitors
- Clerical, in many areas
- Mail Room
- Nursing Service
- Escort
- Discharge waiting room
If you are interested and have the time, you only need to volunteer four hours per month.
Both facilities in Connecticut have needs; these needs are also at the Community Care Units (CBOC) as well as Veterans Centers.
- Magazines and newspaper (subscriptions)
- Art Supplies
- Beverages and associated supplies
- Internet fees
- Canteen books
- Gift certificates
- Small appliances Community Care Center

With the holidays and winter fast approaching it would be great to remember those who are a lot less fortunate.
The VAMC in Newington Connecticut is now accepting mens clothing (no womens clothing is needed) including, coats, scarf's, and gloves. They also need toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste and brushes) and grocery store cards (prefer Stop & Shop) in denominations of $10.
If you or your Post would like to send money instead of sending the items requested, you may send a check (payable to: Department of Connecticut VFW) to: VFW P.O. BOX429 Rocky Hill, CT 06067 Please include on the memo section of the check "to be used for VAVS at Newington / West Haven". You may designate the CT VA Hospital to which you want to send your monetary donation.
NOTE: We are not sure if West Haven is accepting clothing at this time. The best thing to do if you have something you want to donate is to contact either Charlie (cdshort19@aol.com) or Steve (sawowk@comcast.net) for up to date info.
