Convention Highlights

The Mary Romano Exemplary award went to Helen Faucher, a Past Department President and a member of the Higganum VFW Ladies Auxiliary.  Bessie spoke of Helen’s dedication and her successful striving to overcome the effects of her stroke and how far she has come. She was honored to accept the award.

The Love Gift recipient Doris Laferriere was chosen by Immediate Past State President Bessie Kibner because she has long served the Auxiliary and given Bessie a lot of help, especially this year.  She has gone above and beyond the call of duty.  Being chosen was quite a surprise to her.  Doris accepted with tears and recalled PDP Grace Argenta who started this gift and was pleased to be listed among the recipients. She thanks everyone for their generosity.

Our National Representative PNP Sandy Germany was wonderful and we were so pleased to have had her with us.  She seemed to enjoy her stay in Connecticut.  She thanked us for our hospitality and thanked her Aide Candice Shepard. We were alson pleased to have Past National Secretary Treasurer Celia Davis who came to Convention as a promise to Debbie.

The VFW National Representative was National Commander in Chief George Lisicki who was also great to be with.  He gave a wonderful speech at the Convention banquet and presented our Governor M. Jody Rell with the Medal of Freedom a most prestigious awards.

We presented a check to Griffin Hospital for their Multiple Sclerosis work to representative Bill Powanda for $2384.00, Bill said our gift would help and thanked us for thinking of them and for finding them on the web page.

Mayor of Prospect Robert Chatfield was presented the American flag for his office. He is the longest serving official in the State.

Awards were presented to the Community Service Volunteer of the Year Katherine Kalwat a member of the New Britain Auxiliary. Two of the Patriotic Art winners were present to accept their awards. They were 1st place Basak Ekinici representing Putnam Auxiliary 1523 and Samantha Tencza representing Devon Auxiliary 7788, the second place winner Joseph Dericco was unable to attend due to illness.  We also had the Young Volunteer of the Year Mitchell LaFlamme of Norwich 594.  The Junior Unit from Prospect were there for a presentation to State President Bessie Kibner.
